BMX kids with HUGE sound systems, New Maps and Atlases, Birthday Boyz

Not having a reason to wake up in the morning makes it very hard to go to sleep at a reasonable time.  I’m waking up early tomorrow morning though, to fish for rock fish.

A)  Some kids in Queens soup up their bikes with gigantic sound systems.  At first I thought the idea was insanely stupid, but after watching the trailer I like the kids more and more.  Nothing serious, they’re just building them out of boredom.

Maps and Atlases new EP You Me and the Mountain is worth a few listens.  They’re developed a nice melodic style while continuing to be super technical.  My favorite song is Witch.

Brooklyn, New York’s Birthday Boyz are one of the best bands in screamo right now.  They recently returned from a tour in China.  Back in 2005 they released a 12″ entitled Bro Cycle (recorded by Converge’s Kurt Ballou) that is killer.  They have all of the songs from that release streaming on their myspace so go check them out.

(From their website)

“Birthday Boyz play a strain of very dire, dynamic, metallic post-hardcore music. the sound is all about the build, the churn, the catharsis, the soaring guitar break, the crushing re-entry. i keep coming back to the word dire, because these guys play as if it’s just the end of everything, but there’s this really intense beauty being harnessed as well. it’s not dark as much as it is just extreme and heavy in the emotional as well as physical senses.”

Dark Forces Swing Blind Punches did an excellent review of the band/Bro Cycle.  Here.
