Y: The Last Man, Thursday/Envy mini review, World War Z.

10.14.08 | Comment?

I feel like I’ve been all over the place these last 3 weeks.  I don’t even think I’ve stayed at my home for more than 2 nights so I’m sorry I haven’t been able to update as much as I would like.  My girlfriend just arrived back home after being away for 3 months so that’s where all of my time has been going.

Anyway, a bunch of things have happened while I’ve been MIA.

The meltdown of the American economy is at hand.  Fugg.  I liquefied all of my assets into gold bars.

Biden crushed Palin in the VP debates just like everyone expected he would.  After watching Palin speak for 2 hours I’d heard enough gosh’s, Doggone it’s, Darn Right’s, You Betcha’s, Team of Mavericks, and a slew of other buzz words to last me a lifetime.  If McCain wins I hope she won’t be allowed to stray within speaking distance of a hot microphone.

Here are some things you might be interested in.

1)  Y The Last Man

I finished reading all 10 serials of Y: The Last Man, a comic that follows the the adventures of Yorick Brown, the last remaining male on earth, after every other living mammal with a Y chromosome is suddenly killed by a mysterious plague.  Definitely one of the most enjoyable and thought provoking stories I’ve ever read.  I know I’ve mentioned the comic before and I still think you should pick it up.

You can download the first issue HERE.

2)  Thursday Improves Kind of?

I am disappointed with Thursday’s half of the Thursday/Envy split.  I was expecting a return to form and instead got one really good song with 3 mediocre post-hardcore songs tacked on.  Thursday’s opening track is the best material they’ve written since Full Collapse.  It’s fast and melodic with catchy vocal hooks and lyrics that are reminiscent of War all the Time.   After hearing the intensity of this opening song, Thursday’s remaining 3 songs sound weak in comparison.  2 instrumentals and another song with half hearted lyrics.  Weak.

Envy’s side still rules though.

3)  World War Z

The 8 hour long drive home from Ohio granted me and my girlfriend just enough time to listen to the entirety of Max Brook’s fictional zombie war chronicle World War Z. The audio book for this novel is incredibly well put together with a top notch cast including Alan Alda, Carl Reiner, Mark Hamill, Rob Reiner, and Henry Rollins, among others.  If you’re going on tour, drive a ton, or just want to listen to a great piece of work I highly recommend you go rent the cds from your library.

“Rather than a grand overview or a single perspective, World War Z is instead a collection of individual accounts in the form of interviews between the author and the characters. Taking place in the 2010s, the book charts a war against zombies from remote oddities, to a global pandemic to mass panic, and then to an armed struggle to reclaim the planet from the undead.”  - via wikipedia

Sorry, I can’t find a direct download source but if you know anything about torrents you can snatch it HERE.
