Sometimes good things just fall into your lap when you aren’t expecting them at all. Like Hot Green, Algernon Cadwallader’s 7″ that I didn’t even know was in the works, let alone about to be released, until skream your lungs out posted it.
After a few listens I can say that Hot Green picks up right where Some Kind of Cadwallader left off. These 3 songs feature the same type of jangly guitar riffs and solid bass lines that made their last record such an enjoyable listen. It also sounds like their adding a few new instruments to the mix. Do I hear a basoon (or a flute)? An accordian? A trumpet? Yes, indeed.
If the songs on this 7″ are any indication, Algernon Cadwallader is begining to move past their Cap n’ Jazz hang up to create a sound of their own.
And I just discovered that their EP Some Kind of Cadwallader has been released on vinyl. Man, I’m behind. I need to order that.
I’m really into the artwork.

i heard about the 7″ leak from chuglife but didnt really jump at DLing it for fear that it was more cap’n jazz-esque tracks. im not saying that i dont give algernon credit for what they are doing, and they are definitely blowing up, but when i listen to them all i hear is cap’n jazz. i’d much rather just listen to cap’n jazz rather than a band heavily inspired by them. on the other hand, cap’n jazz doesnt play out anymore so i guess algernon is the next best thing. i just hate it when people hear a new band and think that they have this amazing “new” sound when in fact it’s just heavily derived from an earlier and lesser known band (by the current scene’s standards).
i dont really know where you stand on all of that, but needless to say, im going to give the 7″ a listen hoping for a more algernon sound rather than Analphabetapolothology pt. 2
i think it is obvious that they are inspired by cap’n jazz, but do you really think that they sound a lot like cap’n jazz? because i dont. they are actually doing their own thing along with the influences they have. isnt that what almost every band does? everyone says they sound like cap’n jazz, everyone is getting into them. i think saying that they sound too much like cap’n jazz is just like the hype growing around their music. come on, man.
their first album sounded EXACTLY like cap’n jazz which is the reason why everyone says they sound like cap’n jazz. I think they’ve begun to cement their own sound on Hot Green. They are coming correct indeed.
