Photographer Shaun Irving bought an old mail truck off of Ebay and converted it into a giant mobile camera obscura by drilling a hole into the side of the truck and outfitting it with changeable lenses. When asked what makes the Camera Truck so unique Shaun replies that it’s the simplicity of the process.
“My lenses are old military surplus. One even came from a submarine periscope. I set me aperture with a piece of scrap paper. My shutter is a cardboard box. My developing rig consists of two buckets, a sponge and a garden hose. And developer, of course. Sure it imposes limits on my work. But those limits help me stay focused on getting the best shot I can, when I can.”
I love how you can see the smears and smudges from the development process. It gives me the sense of staring out of an old grimey bus window. I’d like to see one of these in person because the prints, measuring 6 x 3.5 feet, are gigantic.
