Daitro Disses Thursday

10.21.09 | 1 Comment

(Edit 10/21/09 there’s more to this story HERE.  Daitro weren’t directly being douches.)

Basically, Thursday contacted European screamo band Daitro about doing a tour together;  Daitro declined and then went on to preach a holier than thou sermon on DIY ethics.   Check out the actual conversation below.

Daitro’s response to Thursday

hi Ryan

sorry but we declined because we hate this band, we just can’t take them seriously and they totally suck with their promo photos, booking agent, tourbus, major record company and all that crap we feel too much far from. Sorry to disappoint you but fortunately we don’t need these kind of offers to tour the US
!!

all the best

Geoff Rickly replies on the Thursday fan site, Thursdizzle.net:

DIY is and has been alive in the US for a long time… I think a lot of the ethics of DIY are great(and I’ve been involved in that scene in many aspects for years[thanks lost in Paris]- as a promoter of house shows, putting out indie records, playing in bands that play DIY, community based shows and working to help establish a DIY network [allagesmovementproject]) and a lot of the people who espouse them are sincere. And a lot of the people that preach DIY just want to look cool and self-righteous. Great. Just what the world needs.

Thursday has been touring for ten years and played all over the world. We’ve had people help us, we’ve employed our friends, payed for their healthcare, made tons of music and art. It’s been a full time job and we’ve loved it. If we had stayed diy and done it all, we would have done 1/2 the touring or less… How many chances have you had to see daitro???

I could also learn to make my own clothes and build my own house but I don’t. Neither do most people. When you break it down we all choose what we want to make. Thursday chose music over business as a job.

It’s kind of shitty on the part of Daitro because a simple “No, thanks” would have sufficed but I can see where they’re coming from.  I think bands involved in the DIY punk community are proud of their involvement and don’t want to taint their past service to the culture by partnering with a major label band and having to give in to all of the stuff that DIY ethics preach against.  That’s understandable.  Too bad they were douches about it.

I guess Thursday is a major label band and they do participate in all of the shit that people like to make fun of about major label bands.  But I also think Thursday have done a good job of holding on to their ethics throughout their career.  I mean they just went on tour with touche amore, la dispute, and young widows.  3 bands that are relatively unknown outside of the punk community.  I think that rules.  Plus they wrote Full Collapse.  It’s hard to hate on that unless you’re just an asshole.

Anyway,  you should go download Daitro’s new album Y because it’s the best album I’ve listened to all year.
