Lucky me; I wasn’t aware that A.A. Bondy’s new album When the Devil’s Loose was released yet but apparently it is – and it’s getting great reviews.

“Like few singer-songwriters before him, A. A. Bondy captures that unease, that deep, pitch-black loneliness (there are people around, sure, but they don’t know you) that Dylan explored on his earliest records. The Tallest Man on Earth did it last year with his aching Shallow Grave, but Bondy pushes the feeling further into beautiful isolation.

His new album, When the Devil’s Loose, sounds dusty. It creaks like your grandmother’s rocking chair sitting in the corner of a room lit only by fading daylight. Bondy’s songs are slow — sometimes extraordinarily slow — meaning every guitar pick, every snare drum pop and every syllable of every word that leaks out of his mouth makes an impression. With a close listen, not a sound will seem unnecessary.

Bondy’s music, including the beautiful American Hearts of 2007, weighs a ton; the music literally pushes down on you. On your heart, on your shoulders. Loose is the sound of carrying a heavy load for miles, and finally shedding it – you must. You can go no longer with this weight strapped to your back. You must be free. Loose is the sound of letting go.”  (via MyOldKentuckyBlog)
